What to Expect During Your Ultrasound

Preparation

Follow any specific preparation instructions. For some scans, you may need a full bladder or to fast.

Positioning

You'll lie on an examination table. A small amount of warm gel is applied to your skin to help conduct sound waves.

Scanning

Our sonographer moves a transducer over the area being examined. You'll see real-time images on the screen.

Results

Images are reviewed by our radiologists. Results are typically available within 24-48 hours and sent to your doctor.

Preparation for Your Ultrasound

Abdominal Ultrasound

  • Fast for 6 hours before your appointment
  • No food, drinks, or smoking
  • Take essential medications with small sips of water
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing

Pelvic Ultrasound

  • Drink 1 liter of water 1 hour before
  • Arrive with a full bladder
  • Don't urinate before the scan
  • Wear clothing that allows easy access to abdomen

Pregnancy Ultrasound

  • Early pregnancy: Full bladder required
  • After 20 weeks: No special preparation
  • Wear two-piece clothing for easy access
  • Bring your partner/family for bonding scans

Other Ultrasounds

  • Most other scans need no preparation
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Bring previous imaging if available
  • Arrive 15 minutes early for check-in
